Arugam Bay is a single sandy road on the south-east coast with the best surf in Sri Lanka at the end of it. The season runs from around April or May to September, when the south-west monsoon pushes swell onto the east coast and the wind blows offshore. July and August are the peak, when the sandbars have properly formed and Main Point can hold long, clean rides.

It is a surf town first and a beach town second. If you do not surf, four days here is probably two too many; if you do, it is the reason to plan a summer trip to Sri Lanka at all.

The breaks

Main Point, at the southern end of the bay, is the famous one: a right-hand point break over sand and rock that can run several hundred metres on a good swell. It gets crowded in season and it is not a beginner’s wave.

Whiskey Point, about fifteen minutes north, is a gentler right-hander and where most people learn. Peanut Farm, twenty minutes south, has two peaks — a mellower inside section and a punchier outside one — and is quieter. Elephant Rock, further south again, is a beautiful longboard-friendly wave with a short walk in. Okanda, an hour south near the Kumana park boundary, is for people prepared to travel.

Learning here

Whiskey Point and the beach break in front of the town are both realistic places to start, and there are plenty of schools and board hire. That said, Weligama on the south coast is the better beginner’s beach and runs in the opposite season — so if you are learning from scratch in December, go there instead.

What else

Kumana National Park, an hour south, is the east coast’s answer to Yala: fewer leopards, far fewer jeeps, and one of the best bird-watching wetlands in the country between April and July. Elephants cross the road around Panama and Lahugala regularly enough that you should not drive it at night.

The lagoon behind the town has crocodiles in it. This is not a colourful detail — do not swim in it.

Getting there

Arugam Bay is a long way from everywhere: roughly eight hours from Colombo, three from Ella and three from Yala. That distance is why it stays relatively unspoilt and why it needs a proper block of time rather than a two-night stop. Coming down from the hill country and continuing to Yala afterwards is the route that wastes the least driving.

Out of season, from November to March, the bay goes flat and most of the town closes.

What to see in Arugam Bay

  • Main Point

    Southern end

The right-hand point break the town is known for. Long rides on a good swell, and crowded in season.

  • Whiskey Point

    15 min north

A gentler right-hander and the usual place to learn or to escape the Main Point crowd.

  • Peanut Farm

    20 min south

Two peaks, one mellow and one punchy, and far fewer people than the town breaks.

  • Kumana National Park

    1h south

Leopard, elephant and outstanding wetland birdlife between April and July, with a fraction of Yala's jeeps.

Questions we get asked about Arugam Bay

Roughly April or May to September, with July and August the peak. The south-west monsoon sends swell onto the east coast and the wind blows offshore, which is the combination that makes it work. From November to March the bay goes flat and most of the town shuts.
