Wilpattu is the largest national park in Sri Lanka and the one people who have already done Yala tend to prefer. It has leopards, sloth bears, elephants and a landscape found nowhere else on the island — the villus, natural sand-rimmed lakes scattered through dry forest, which is what the name means.
The trade is straightforward. Sightings are less frequent than at Yala. The ones you get are usually yours alone.
Villus, and why they matter
Around sixty villus sit in the park, filling with rainwater and drawing everything to their edges. Because they are open ground in otherwise thick forest, they are where animals become visible — a leopard crossing the sand at the edge of a villu is the classic Wilpattu sighting, and it happens without eleven other vehicles arriving.
The forest between them is denser than Yala’s scrub, which is exactly why the density of sightings is lower and the quality of them is higher.
What a safari costs and how long it takes
Park entry is around USD 25 per adult before taxes. Wilpattu is big and the drives are long: a half day here is about five hours against three at Yala, and a full day is the honest way to do it. Two people should budget roughly USD 100 each for a full day including entry, jeep, tracker and taxes.
Go full day. The park is 1,300 square kilometres and a three-hour drive barely leaves the entrance area.
When to go
February to October, with the best months usually February to July. Wilpattu takes rain from the north-east monsoon between October and January, when tracks flood and parts of the park close.
Crucially, Wilpattu stays open through September and October when Yala’s Block 1 shuts for the drought. If your trip falls in that window, this is where you go.
Where it fits
Four hours north of Colombo and about an hour from Anuradhapura, which is the sensible pairing: the ancient city one day, the park the next. It is also the obvious stop if you are travelling between the west coast and the Cultural Triangle rather than doubling back south for Yala.

Questions we get asked about Wilpattu National Park
Yala has far higher leopard density and a better chance per drive. Wilpattu has fewer sightings but you usually have them to yourself, in denser and more interesting country. If it is your only safari and you want the odds, go to Yala; if you have seen Yala or you hate crowds, Wilpattu is the better morning.

A natural sand-rimmed lake. Around sixty of them are scattered through Wilpattu's dry forest, filling with rainwater and drawing animals to open ground where you can actually see them. They are what makes the park look and feel different from anywhere else in Sri Lanka.
